It says mini-reef, not nano-reef dude! Dec 21, 2005
By The PakRat
"the-pakrat"
I picked up this book from a local pet store. I've been in the saltwater hobby for 11 years. I was always a fish-only guy. I snagged this book on a whim, and I love it.
If you are a newbie, and thinking of getting into a mini-reef with live rock, live sand, corals, and maybe some fish .. then this book is a great place to start.
Another reviewer mentions something about the title being deceiving. I think he was looking for a nano-reef book. Like a tiny 12 gallon aquarium. This book is not really about nano-reefing. Check out nano-reef.com if you're really looking for that type of information.

Great Starter Book for Newbies May 04, 2005
By S&H Hi. The first most important comment I want to make is don't buy this book if you are looking for a manual to start up a nano-reef. Mini refers to a small reef aquarium larger than a nano. This book does not teach you how to do this. However, it IS a great starter book that is easy to read, well organized and explains in basic terms how to start up a small reef tank. It was enjoyable reading and it contained some nice colorful photos of corals and fish. There two areas where I think this book fell short. First, the author does not give a lot of diagrams or examples on the exact setup of your tank system, eg, not much on how to aquascape. Secondly, he hedges a lot and seems to take a political way out by not committing himself on certain methods of reef tank maintenance. For this reason, I think that this book would compliment Paletta's book. Purchasing these two books would be more than enough for the beginning saltwater aquarist to, sorry, get their feet wet. Paletta's book gives you aquascape designs, long lists of compatible fish and even some sample tank setups including equipment and livestock. Kurtz's book is still excellent and provides some more modern 'reef theory' such as plenums, deep sand beds and ozone/redox than Paletta's book does. I say definitely buy this if you are a 'newbie' and want to get your tank up and going. Good luck.

Horrible - Not informative at all. Jun 20, 2008
By Paige Beauregard This book is written by the same author as The Simple Guide to Marine Aquariums. These two books contain virtually identical information -- in some cases they're even word for word the same. I thought this book would be a step up for someone moving from a basic fish only tank to a reef tank -- it isn't. It spends chapter after chapter discussing the nitrogen cycle and basic filtration. He mentions a sump many times in the book, yet never explains what it is, how to use one, or even shows a picture of one...not the best move to skip this extremely important information when talking to beginners. I bought this book thinking it would have a basic 'intro to sumps', one of the most important pieces of reef keeping equipment and I get no information whatsoever. This book is completely worthless.

Evasive and simplistic Nov 06, 2005
By D. Gerasimov
"DG"
Lies start with the title. The book has no info whatsoever about mini or nano reefs. Just regular saltwater aquarium info. The author even confesses to not liking a tiny tank where species selection is limited. Not a shred of data above regular tank care. Very limited species descriptions, noting in-depth. Mostly catering to expencive fish stores.
On the positive side, if the book could be renamed "reef tank for ADD patients" it could have served a purpose. It does contain a bird-eye view of a reef tank hobby, and some aspects of keeping a saltwater reef tank. Dont buy this book if you are looking for details on how to set up a mini- or nano- reef: you will be disappointed.

Fun and encouraging but not enough Jan 09, 2006
By Nick A fun and encouraging book that is practical when setting up a new tank. Up-to-date information that is well structured. On the downside, this book shys away from explaining some concepts or warnings in better detail and annoys when the author jokingly admits he doesn't really get it either because one has to be a chemist for this or that anyway.
