Once you get to know it, great machine Feb 11, 2008
By A. Luangrath I would say this is an okay machine for beginners. I say this because some seem to have the impression that the machine is supposed to do everything for you. First read the manual thoroughly so you can understand how the machine works. Second, in the beginning, my stitches kept getting tangled, and I realized all I needed to do was fix the tension. You just have to play around with the machine to understand how it works. Second, the "S" button is not in the stitch selector dial but stitch length. I've made 4 different projects with this machine so far and I love it. Works well and I'm sure I'll have this one for a while.

Love it so far! Mar 26, 2007
By Kathryn Smith I have gotten three hand me down machines in the last 2 months or so. The first my aunt couldnt get to work, the second she said it wasnt even worth the attempt and the third was an absolute nightmare. I was told on that one id have to take it to to a repair shop , I said i would just buy a new one. This is the one I chose.
The manual is pretty easy to follow, and there are arrows on the machine on how to thread it.
Im a beginner at sewing, and compared to the other machines I looked at , this one looks durable and just all around solid.
If I can figure this out, SO CAN YOU!

It rocks! Wow! Sep 30, 2008
By Creative Chic Stitches I suck at sewing machines and I got this one really easily. The directions were really clear. I have sewn maybe 3 different times and I got it first try. I really love it. I like the sleek design. It's relatively light weight and it's pretty small - two concerns I had when picking which one. The person below me said this machine sucks but she's also a first time sewing machine user. Maybe get some lessons before writing a review saying the machine sucks. Maybe it's user error. Even my fiance understands this machine now. It's easy. The stitches are really nice, it comes with some necessary tools. You can always trust the name Singer and you know they'll always be around to replace parts or get additional accessories. Oh I got the one with the automatic threader - pretty awesome!!! I don't wear glasses and I really don't plan on it for a while so I was really thrilled to use this option.

Great for learning to sew! Sep 25, 2008
By Jennifer Clark My husband got me the Esteem on sale at Target for $99 about 5 weeks ago. Prior to that, I had absolutely no experience sewing and had never even touched a sewing machine. I was able to take it out of the box, get the bobbin wound, thread the needle, and start sewing in about an hour. The automatic needle threader DOES work, but you have to really look closely at first and see the tiny hook so you know exactly how to put the thread; once you understand exactly how you need to put the thread, it's a cinch (I've seen other reviews complaining that it doesn't work). By the end of the first night, I had sewn a pair of cloth baby crib shoes. Within a week, I had also made a pin cushion and a baby bib, and I've now made a skirt for my twins as well. Yes, the bobbin thread gets jammed, and I have to take the bobbin and bobbin carriage (is that what it's called??) out periodically to clear the jam, but I'm guessing that's pretty much what you get with a $99 machine!! I will say that the manual is not great, and I've had better luck finding sewing tutorials online to guide me with the basics of sewing, rather than trying to rely on the manual for instructions. Overall, I'm enjoying my machine and am having fun with all the possibilities!!

Fatal jam the first time I used it Aug 28, 2008
By L. Forest My husband got me this model for my birthday last week. I have been sewing for a few months now - borrowing a friend's Brother CS6000 which worked really well for me (I totally recommend that one!). The Singer 1732 was pretty simple to set up, and I was excited to have an uncomplicated first machine. I followed the instruction manual exactly to set up the machine and threads. Upon the first press of the pedal, the bobbin thread jammed - I was unable to remove the jammed thread or even operate the machine without taking it apart. I checked reviews of this model online, and I found a lot of people have had similar problems with jamming. So I returned it and bought a Brother CE5000PRW (Project Runway Limited Edition) - a simpler model than but very similar to my friend's reliable Brother CS6000. So far so good!
