Lovely color combinations from a quilting veteran! Aug 14, 2008

Darlene Zimmerman is a major contributor in the quilting industry. I bought this book because I know this veteran will always teach me something new. And her color combinations are divine.
This book has a chapter for each month of the year, and most chapters include a simple recipe, motivating quotation, or household tip. There is nothing too complicated here, and color schemes range from 2-tone to too fabulously floral.
You might be familiar with Ms. Zimmerman's name from some quilting tools she has developed (the Tri Tool and the Recs Tool) and these tools, along with The Easy Angle and The Companion Angle) are featured in the very helpful last section entitled "Tool Tutorials". You might be able to make the patterns without these tools, using some you already have, but they do indeed help trim up and size those triangles and rectangles.
My favorite design is the month of June's "Wild Roses", not only for the color combo, but also for the peaceful photograph of two Adirondack chairs looking over fields and hills. This could almost become a coffee table book if it ever left my sewing room!!

I have been waiting for the release of this book for awhile,it has some fantastic projects in it, both for just starting and more experienced quilters, the photos are great and the instructions clear, I would recomend this to all quilters, do yourself a favour and get a copy, you wont be disappointed.

This is a good book for beginners and beyond. The quilts are lovely and the instructions are detailed with pictures to help you. There are several that I want to make. This is a good one to add to your quilt library collection.
A Baker's Dozen of Beautiful quilts in traditional styles Jan 25, 2011

I never tire of well made traditional style quilts, and this book gives you a selection of 13 of them. There is one for each month of the year, except August--it rates two. That is because the pinwheel design can be made with the leftovers from the first quilt for that month. Though not all the designs would rate a "beginner" level, the instructions are so detailed and clear that I believe a patient beginner could tackle them. There are no less than six pages of instruction per pattern and some have as many as 10 pages. There are colored pictures of the quilts along with full-color diagrams to detail each step of the process. Arrows even indicate which direction to press each seam.
Projects vary from queen size quilts to throws, table runners, and even a wall hanging. Nationally known quilt teacher, designer and author, Darlene Zimmerman, includes a chapter of general instructions that is well illustrated with color photos. There is also a tutorial for using her Tri-Recs tools, but there are templates with the patterns if you do not have the tools. From a patriotic quilt in July, to a fall table runner in November, the quilts are carefully chosen for the month they represent. January is a white star pattern on a blue background that looks like frosty flakes of snow. February is a pink and brown basket pattern representing a chocolate raspberry truffle. April is a reproduction of a 1930s quilt top Darlene had purchased and recently hand quilted. She calls it Daffodil stars, for its springy yellow sashing and stars mixed with lavender and 30s prints. That gives you an idea of the way she ties traditional quilt designs into the different months of the year.
The book is sprinkled with tips, thoughts and beautiful photos of Daffodil Hill Vineyard, which Darlene always calls "Lavender Hill Farm" because she was there when the lavender fields were in bloom. A joy to look through whether you ever make any of the quilts, but they are well worth making.
