 Prismacolor 132 - Strange Mix Feb 04, 2011

I bought this from Amazon to replace a set of 132 I had bought at a local art store. I had given my previous store-bought set to my nephew and he agreed to replace it. The price on Amazon was about $15-$20 less than in the local store so I ordered this set from Amazon. Thought I'd be a good guy and save my nephew a few $$.
It arrived in good time and was shrink-wrapped, so I assumed it was factory fresh, as advertised, as was my store-bought set.
When I opened it, I was a little surprised to see all the pencils were sharpened, unlike the store-bought set, which had no sharpened points, just factory-fresh flat ends. A little different, but acceptable to me.
I then went through all the pencils, to separate them by color family in their plastic carriers. That's when I noticed most of these pencils were made in Mexico, a few were made in the USA, a few didn't specify where they were made, and one pencil actually had "Scholar" imprinted, and a different number system, which is a lower-grade (student) pencil.
Most had "Premier" engraved, but a few did not.
I'm not saying any of these pencils came used, they were all new, but it looks as if someone, somewhere, put these 132 together from different sets, some possibly older, and of course the student-grade pencil.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd replace my store-bought set with....well....another store-bought set.
Definitely not the usual fine Amazon purchase I'm used to. I actually feel, a little, cheated.

In my local art store this set costs 30$ more, even with a 40% off coupon. So definitely a great deal here at Amazon. I purchased these colored pencils in January of this year. I have used them fairly often since then and I am very satisfied. The color selection in the set is wonderful. I was unsure if the larger set would have wasted colors, but the variety of hues has been particularly convenient in ensuring a solid laydown of whichever value I am looking for. Currently Prismacolor is changing the look of their colored pencils, so there are two different pencil 'looks' in the tin. The differences are just superficial in the printing on the outside of the pencil, I found no difference in quality, or performance. The tin pictured (the longer rectangular one) is the old style box I believe, the one that shipped to me was a square tin. The pencils came sharpened, but since the square tin doesn't come with a sharpener, it makes sense. The only complaint I have at all is very minor, one pencil out of all 132 was sharpened at the wrong end. This really wouldn't stop me from purchasing these pencils again.

They're nice pencils, as always. Prismacolor can be trusted for that. However I was surprised to see that they were already sharpened, which I didn't like, and that they didn't come with a pencil sharpener like most prisma sets do. They also don't come with the "art stix" that some of the other sets do, but I never expected they would.
Some other reviewers mentioned that not all the pencils they bought were prisma, these are. they're all painted the way they should be an everything is in order. A good buy in my opinion, at other art stores these are at LEAST $80 more and where I was looking even $97 or $100 more.

The set I received from Amazon was the same set shown above. It arrives shrink wrapped and all pencils are already sharpened to fine points. In the set there is a little card that warns you that prismacolor is slowly changing their look, so I expected to find some pencils that looked different than the rest. In my set there was just the one, a 30% warm grey with the new design (looks much more professional actually) and still possess' the number system.
As I went through the set I found one pencil had been sharpened on the wrong end, which is a bit of an annoyance, but nothing one can't deal with, still, for such an expensive set... Anyway, one thing that did kind of irritate me was I realized I had a duplicate for the #928 (chartreuse) and it made me wonder what was missing from the set. On the back of the tin it gives you the numbered list of all the pencils the set is supposed to contain, so I had to match the pencils to the numbers in order to realize it was the #1005 (Limepeel) that was missing. Luckily I had a previous 48 pencil set that contained it so this set is still complete even with this single error. In any case, for the price they charge for these sets they should really be a little more careful in making sure the sets are complete.
I'm a fan of prismacolor pencils so this wouldn't deter me from buying another set, but I'm glad I didn't pay the normal sticker price for this either.

I definitely got what I was expecting. I've been using them a lot and I can't enjoy them more!! They glide really really smooth and blend amazingly well... plus with this set you can actually find every color you've imagined. If you compare them with any other brand outside, you'll see the difference. My friend got the same set at our local store and they were identical products but more expensive. I think this one was a really good buy. Very happy.
