Great pencil set.. Oct 29, 2008

I didn't buy this pencil set off of amazon but rather dick blick, its nearly 7 dollars less. Overall this pencil set is great. I especially like the wood less graphite pencils which if individually bought coast 2 dollars each. I have yet to use them for something big, but for what I've used them for they work great.

For the experienced artist; the artist who has been around the block a few times and has "been there and done that," this is probably not a great or even a useful buy in that you, the person that has been doing this for years, probably already has either tried the mix offered here, or already own the ones that work best for you.
Think of this as a "sampler set." If you have ever used Prismacolor graphite pencils you simply do not really want to go out and buy a few dozen of one type or grade or another, as you may find you dislike them (something I cannot imagine with this company) or that you have absolutely no use for them. Different artists like different things; some will hate an item that other will love...that is the nature of the beast. I personally like Prismacolor products, but to be quite frank, had I gone out and bought a handful of the harder grade pencil, I would be stuck with them as I seldom use them in my work.
These are a nice quality pencil though, the sharpener works as well as any of this type, the sanding board is indeed useful and you get a gum eraser which of course is quite useful.
I suppose, as far as I am concerned, this set is ideal for either the person who has never used this product before and wants to explore just what is available, or as in my case, it make an ideal present to grandchildren and friends who show interest in drawing.
Now please note that as another reviewer has pointed out...you can indeed purchase this set for several dollars less at many art stores. I personally live no closer than 80 miles from a store that handles this product so it would be beneficial for me to order here. I certainly would not make the trip just to purchase this set of pencils. On the other hand, if I lived in an urban area and only had a few blocks to drive, I would probably do some shopping around.

I got this for my husband. He opened it and loves it very much. He has been waiting to use it until he has more free time.
