Excellent Turtle Filter Apr 15, 2009
By Frances Wheeler
"Frances Wheeler"
I've tried a lot of different filters over the years for my turtles, but never quite had the right one. Turtles only use up half of the tank space with water so this is a challenge for keepers. Some companies have addressed this problem, but when I first got my painted turtle he was as small as a quarter and I was afraid he would get caught in one of those filters. So I bought the fluval underwater filter and it has worked perfectly for the last 3 years! And turtles are about 10 times dirtier than fish (not to mention there are two cory cats that live in the tank and a number of guppies or goldfish)The filter keeps the tank very clean. I do have to clean filter regularlly about twice a month, but again turtles are messy. The filter does let me know when it needs to be cleaned, because it will make a sound, otherwise it is super quiet. The filter is very easy to clean I take out the sponge (which can be replaced), but I usually just clean it out and rinse the filter. I just put my turtle into a 25 gallon and tank, so I will be getting a larger fluval to clean that one, but to recap it's quiet and works great, I have yet to find a better filter!

So so.. Jul 08, 2011
By CD Family I've had this filter for about 2 weeks. I used it first in a "Lee's habitat", which was a disaster because the current is too strong for that little amount of water (it's a large plastic habitat with a raised part, which can be used as a home for reptiles, -terrarium- amphibians -rain forest- or aquatic turtles - about 3 gal of water space with a asking platform) So no, in 3 gallons of water the filter creates too much of a current. I'd have to turn it off while they ate because they would get knocked around otherwise :( I now have it in a 10gal aquarium, and it seems to work alright. My only concern is that it only filters out debris. Like other reviews stated; there is just a sponge in there, which is pretty "coarse" and stuff can get past it easily, in which case it would just get "spit back out".. It doesn't filter ammonia or small pieces of debris etc (turtles are very messy eaters and their food, if left uneaten, disintegrates and lies on the bottom to rot.) It has only been a few days in the 10 gal tank, but I assume I will still have to dump out, clean the aquarium by hand, and replace the water at least once a week... I am looking into an ammonia filter, or at least something that has a carbon filter in there... something more than a simple sponge that catches only half of the debris..
Can handle a small turtle in a small tank Jul 01, 2010
This filter is great for small tanks. The water goes through a sponge which you have to rinse out about once or twice a week. It's also VERY quiet. This isn't the best filter if you have turtle, though it definitely helps a lot.
GREAT PRODUCT AND GREAT DEALER!! Apr 06, 2009
By Lizard I've ordered from Petsolutions several times and they always been top notch. I'm using this Fluval 1 for my sump filtration. I have a 150 gallon aquarium with a sump filter. The area where the water collects at the sump pump (just prior to being pumped back into the aquarium) tends to get sediment which accumulates. This is the perfect solution. It gently aerates that sump area so now it's crystal clear. I know it's kind of wierd to have a small filter for my sump pump which is quite a powerful filter system, but it really does exactly what I thought it would do and keeps that area of the sump from accumulating crud. It's great!!! (algae, debris or whatever it is)

A good low-maintenance filter for small tanks Dec 23, 2009
By Jonathan I use this filter in a 10-gallon tank for my turtles, and am so glad I did. I used to have a Duetto filter similar to this one, but the turtle food kept getting sucked into the filter and gunking up all the internal parts, which included two sponges, a charcoal cartridge and three plastic parts that made up the filter cage.
This filter, not counting suction cups, has four parts: a motor unit, a sponge, and a two-part plastic casing that contains the sponge and attaches to the motor unit. That means there is only one part that needs replacing - the sponge - instead of three in the Duetto. It is also very easy to disassemble and clean, taking roughly one-quarter of the time of any other filter I have used.
Just one word of caution - this is a small filter. I would not use it in even a mid-sized aquarium, but for small aquariums this is one of the best filters out there.
