Handy little cutting mat Jun 01, 2011
By J. Olsen I reach for this mat so often I decided I should review it. I was working on a quilt that had so many small half-square triangles and I was tired of squaring up two sides, picking the fabric up, rotating and replacing it before repositioning my ruler for the next cuts. I knew that rotating mats existed, so I decided to give one a try. It has been so nice to use--after the first cuts I just turn the mat and finish cutting (using a ruler the size of the square I need). I had been concerned that it wouldn't be sturdy enough and that the sides of the mat would slope down and distort the cuts. There is no such trouble. The construction is clever and the materials are sturdy. You have a firm surface for a precision cut. I have trimmed everything from 2" pieces to 8 1/2" pieces (these barely fit). I would strongly recommend this for quilters who do a lot of projects that require squaring up smaller pieces. I am considering getting a larger one now for bigger blocks. This is a helpful gadget.
ETA: It has been almost a year since I posted this review and gave this product 5 stars. I am adjusting it down a star after heavy use has caused the surface of the mat to start chipping away. I have been using it pretty non-stop, but I have also used my large Olfa mat a similar amount. They both claim to be self-healing, but the Olfa mat still has a smooth surface, where this one is so pocked that I had to replace it. Olfa makes rotating mats and I was tempted to replace it with one of those, but they didn't have one this small, which has been so handy, and the price of the smallest one I could find was about three times the price of this little unit. I still give it 4 stars because of the size, function, and price, but I have removed one star because I would have liked to see it last longer.
