Strong Odor.....with Warning from the Company Apr 15, 2010
By Petite Fleur I went to my sewing/hobby store to buy a self-healing mat for my scrapbooking. Before I did, I looked at reviews from different sites and noticed some remarks about odors on self-healing mats. While in the store, I checked for any odor in the mats. Although this Fiskars mat had a slight chemical smell, I decided to buy this one because it fit my needs. It's very attractive, with pastel colors and the cut markings on both sides. Plus the price was very good.
I'm writing this review three days after the purchase. The chemical odor coming from this mat actually smells much stronger!! I thought the smell was from being packaged and would eventually go away, but it hasn't. I was also alarmed to read a sticker on the mat with a WARNING. It states "This product contains chemicals KNOWN to the state of California to cause CANCER, BIRTH DEFECTS, and/or REPRODUCTIVE HARM."
Taking that warning into account, plus it already smells strongly of chemicals, and I would be cutting into it.....I decided to return it. Even without the Cancer warning I would have to return it. I can't take that stinky chemical odor!

Self healing cutting mat Apr 13, 2011
By JAH I bought this from a local craft store a few months ago to use with a rotary cutter for fabric cutting. I never noticed a smell from it as others had, and I'm really sensitive to smells. I use this cutting mat every single day, multiple times a day. It really is self healing, you do need to wipe it down with a damp cloth every now and again (as it states). I'm pretty aggressive with my rotary cutter (want to make sure it goes through the fabric the first time), so I press down quite hard with it, and the mat is still in great shape. My only regret with buying this is that I wish I would have bought the largest size available so I didn't have to move it when cutting large patterns :).
Great product! Jul 13, 2011
By Neringa Amazing! I have this product for about 3 years now. I use it for my artwork, and it is very good. The surface is nice and smooth to cut on and rulers definately help you. I also dont remove it right away off my table, so it makes a nice and smooth bottom, if you are drawing on thinner paper.

Not for use with Xacto blades Oct 13, 2010
By SavvyShopper Being forewarned of the odor, I bought this mat months before I knew I'd need it and let it sit in the garage. Most of the stink is gone now, thankfully. However, my main complaint with this mat is that it is useful only for rotary blades. The first cut I made using a knife has gouged it permanently. Repeated "unhealed" cuts cause the plastic to splinter off into my hands, giving me slivers. Be sure you buy a mat made especially for use with xacto knives and not rotary cutters.
