Beautiful! Mar 01, 2012
By Vanessa When finished, this piece is absolutely gorgeous. It's challenging and I definitely wouldn't recommend it for a beginner, but it's the first piece of this size and complexity I had done and with a lot of time and patience I managed to finish it in 4 months (there wasn't much else going on for me at that time). I never ran out of floss, although with a piece this big, you have to expect to go through several needles, which I did. They either broke or began to corrode so badly they wouldn't slide smoothly any more. I've gotten a lot of complements on it and I'm so happy with the end result. There is very little fabric left unstitched and from just a few feet away, it looks more like a painting than needlework. Definitely worth all of the time and effort I put into finishing it.
One thing I would suggest is that you use a sharp needle for backstitching around the balloons. You can get the placement more precisely that way and make the lines look smoother. I also sometimes used longer stitches when backstitching over longer areas to avoid cutting up the continuity of the lines and you can't tell the difference. Outlining the balloons was the most painstaking part, but I'm glad I spent the extra time getting it perfect.
I would also be sure to iron out the creases in the Aida before beginning. I didn't iron until after I was finished and I never was able to get the vertical crease out of the center of the fabric. Between ironing and stretching it when mounting, I was able to minimize how noticeable it is, but I still find it slightly annoying. Also, I washed this piece in warm water with a little dish soap when I was done and rinsed it thoroughly and none of the colors ran. The crease was still visible, though.
