 Cool but needs instructions Feb 17, 2009

I just bought this kit to make soap with my 7 & 4yo daughters, and made a couple of bars this morning. The bars were fun to make, and the 7 yo can make them without much help (though I'm still the one who is melting the soap in the microwave), though it'd be hard for the 4yo to pour the melted soap in the protruding figures in the molds. It's a bit tricky.
My only discontent with this kit is that the instructions were terrible: a badly photocopied page that does not tell you how to make the multi-color bars that the box shows. Fortunately, I had another Life of the Party kit, and I adapted the instructions to this kit - but otherwise I wouldn't have known what to do. The only other problem is that it doesn't take long to make a bar of soap (though you have to wait 30 minutes to unmold it), which means that you're not getting too much entertainment time out of it.

My daughter got this kit a while ago and we decided to make it today. I initially thought this would be a good craft for her since she's 10, but it wasn't very fun for her at all.
The instructions are horrible! The main instructional part is how to make the soap loaf. That we could handle, however, the mold doesn't stand up straight. You have to have someone hold it or prop it up on something.
The instructions for the other molds are in a little box on the bottom basically telling you to follow the instructions for the loaf. No tips on anything else like how to make the insets one color and the rest of the mold another, or why the ones on the box don't have the white backing on them (they all show the clear glycerin)and are we supposed to use the white or not. We eventually figured it out, but we went through a couple of molds before we figured out an "easy" way. Luckily, I have a kiddo that's not too particular when it comes to things like this, so she wasn't too upset that her soap didn't look like the ones on the box. Really, they look like a hot mess!
You get one bottle each of red, blue, and yellow color, with one bottle of blueberry fragrance. If you have kids that aren't familiar with the color wheel and don't know what to mix with what to get a certain color, this may be pretty limiting for them.
The soap has to keep being reheated to keep from getting the film on top. Since I was the one handling that part, it really didn't matter, but boredom set in for my daughter. You really have to work fast and she's one to take her time. Also, the molds have to sit for awhile before you can pry them out.
All in all, this would have been a fun kit with a little more direction. It's a good concept, but the execution may take some practice.

The molds are fun and it is a great concept. However, the ingredient list is full of synthetic chemicals that I wouldn't put on my body (or more importantly the bodies of my children). The smells from the scented oils are absolutely overpowering (in a headache inducing sort of way). I wouldn't recommend this product at all. There are natural kits or how-to books on the market that would be just as fun and a lot more healthy.

BEWARE MOMS.. PARENTS!
This product caused my daughter 2nd degree burns on her face due to a defect in the plastic of the product that expanded and shot hot wax all over her face!

Pros: We enjoyed this kit (mom and 6-year-old daughter). It was relatively easy and has inspired me to look into buying the necessary elements separately so we can make more. In particular the daisy loaf turned out really nicely. Plus, I loved that the sticky mess just washed away because it's soap!
Cons: 1) I didn't like half of the other molds that were included. Good for a pre-teen maybe, but not for a 6-year-old. 2) There were no quantities listed in the instructions. So, we didn't know how much to melt at a time or how much to dye in order to fill a particular mold. 3) The kit did not include or offer suggestions for something to balance the loaf mold. We ended up laying it across the top of a pot, but it took a few minutes for us to figure that out.
Overall this was a nice kit (really I'd say 3.5 stars if I could) if only because it introduced us to the world of soap molding/coloring/scenting and how doable it is. While I won't get this particular kit again I envision soapy Christmas presents for grandparents, etc, for years to come.
