Another Super Bead book by Susan Ray Feb 11, 2008
By Michelle Alberigi McKenzie
"Owner McKenzie Bookworks"
Well, Susan has done it again. I love the look and feel of this square, spiral bound book. A floppy book can send beads flying off your table as you grab at your book; how nice it is that you can actually open to the project you want to work on, and the book stays open (gotta love that spiral)!
The projects are inspiring, as are the photos. There is a chapter on creating different types of beads, from polymar to lampworked. How do you determine the length of your bracelet? How do you add the ending clasp? Need to know some basic crochet steps? Do you want to add found objects into your jewelry? There's plenty here to keep you busy. Beaded Jewelry also contains a resource guide and contact information on the contributors. What more could a glass and bead lover ask for?
I sent a copy to my sister and to a friend in Germany and they both love it!

Spiral binding a plus, but the book is overall lacking Feb 09, 2009
By Beading by the Lake Too many pictures in this book are either too small, too dark, or out of focus. The small size is my biggest complaint. For example, for some featured projects, the main picture is only 2"x 2". Details are difficult to see for the different projects.
I was also disappointed in how many repeats there are from the author's previous beading books.
A good deal of this book seems to be a promotion for the Beadazzled store. At least 10 pictures are of the store's bead bins and displays, store layout and beading class.
For a book of over 200 pages, it has very few projects, and most of them are basics similar to any other book on bead jewelry.

Fabulous!! Jan 03, 2008

Beaded Jewlery: The Complete Guide by Susan Ray is a fabulous book!! Especially for beginning beaders. It not only gives ideas on patterns but also introduces you to the beading world: how to find beads and accessories, the different types of beads, how to select beads, and even a walk through of a typical bead store. The instructions are easy to understand and follow and the pieces are beautiful! A great inspiration to really get those creative juices flowing. It also describes several beading techniques to give your piece that unique look, just the way you want it. Overall one of my favorite guides.

A great beading guide for the novice or experienced pro! May 01, 2008
By Deanna Killackey I loved the detail in the book. From basic stringing to more elaborate jewelry-making techniques, Susan Ray offers a complete guide to creating beautiful jewelry. The size of the book makes it portable and easy to store in any beading case. I gave a copy to my boss who enjoys unique beading projects and she loved it too!

Unusual book on beads, for those who love to learn some history Apr 24, 2009
By Persian Cat Life-Saver "EMZ"

This book is a hard-cover, lose-leaf and ring-bound book, printed on thick, glossy pages; this makeup makes for practicality, durability -- and even would allow you to remove pages or add your own notes.
In contrast to most other "beading books", this book offers some history on beads, reaching back to ancient times; the historical review is enlightening to those who care about learning and knowing history. The book also offers practical suggestions to those starting up with beading: how to store and sort smartly from the get-go, where to find quality beads, how most beading stores "work" and are set up; the advice is most certainly useful for a beader planning to be in it for the long haul, and not just for a few items, thus intending to build some "stock" and to have ones bead stashes visible and accessible for true creativity when the time comes (rather than rummaging and groping around, or worse, not finding ones own beads -- do I wish that somebody had told me these tricks when I started out!). Last, the book gives concise, but all very useful advice for beaders who might or who will trade or sell their beads; these crisp, easy, and street-smart tips would even enable the beader to build a business in the future, as the tips would "scale up" until a beader would be a very advanced artisan and trades-(wo-)man.
This book was not intended to provide detailed knowledge on tools, techniques, and design ideas; dozens of other books already have done so, and well. There are some most practical tips for a beginner or not-so-advance-yet beader, especially on how to boost and challenge ones creativity and how to break down the art of designing into smaller (and less intimidating) steps and "modules" usable in variations and combinations; all is very good advice, and I would recommend that the still-wet-behind-the-ears beader invest in this book and one other beading book that's "mainstream" in explaining basic tools and techniques in easy language, thereby giving basic instructions to the novice.
Personally, I love this book for filling a gap in the existing literature, and I applaud the author for not shying away from adding to mainstream literature and for refraining from offering "more of the same" to the reader. The book is clear, practical, beautifully put together, and must-be-in-your-first-five-books-on-beading little manual. Also, I loved the pictures: small yet crisp images, well-lit, well-displayed, well-integrated with the text. I loved it -- and I must confess: I am one of those academics who are harsh critics on everything!
Last but not least,
