Good information, but too little of it Jan 31, 2010
By Beth Fuller I have a few basic sewing skills from home ec class years ago, but recently decided I really want to sew. My current skills aren't going to give me the results I want, so I've been reading books to learn proper techniques and pick up tips. I thought it might be easier to learn some of this information by DVD, and chose this one because I have a couple Palmer Pletsch books that I found useful. Martha's delivery style is straight forward, and I like that the camera focuses clearly on what she is demonstrating. The DVD is divided into four sections. The first is titled "Buy correct pattern and tissue fit." Martha tells us which measurements to use to determine pattern size, but that's pretty basic information that most sewers will already know. Then she shows how a couple quick things about tissue fitting, but the subject is covered so quickly that there isn't really any useful information. After watching that section, I knew that tissue fitting was important and that most people will need to make some adjustments to the pattern before sewing. But she didn't actually teach us how to do it -- I believe that's on another DVD. The second section was titled "Notions, cutting, marking and fusing." Martha shows us some notions and equipment that are good to have, and gives a few tips on marking and cutting patterns, and on fusible interfacing. The third section is titled "Pressing, collars, sleeves, zippers." I appreciated the demonstration on how to press princess seams. Then she had a couple tips for applying collars, but it was pretty basic info. Martha then demonstrated how to set in a sleeve. She spent more time on this, and I found it very helpful. Next was how to sew a lapped zipper, but the demonstration for this was a little confusing. Last section was titled "Finishing, buttonhole, hem tips." I liked the tip about putting a bit of Fray Check on the buttonhole before cutting, but that was about all I learned from this section. I was already aware of different options for finishing seams and hems. To summarize, there are a couple techniques Martha covers more thoroughly, and I found those helpful. But the rest of the DVD is such a basic summary of information that it doesn't actually teach much. Probably because it's so short -- I didn't time it but the whole DVD couldn't be more than 30-40 minutes long. I guess I was expecting a longer DVD that demonstrated more actual techniques.

By TNI This is a very good DVD. I found some useful tips from it. I like the collars and sleeves parts.
